'The Word of the Buddha' was the first strictly systematic exposition of all the main tenets of the Buddha's teachings presented in the Master's own words as found in the Sutta-Pitaka of the Buddhist Pali Canon. The Four Noble Truths teach that suffering is inherent in life, but that through acknowledging the origins of suffering and following the Eightfold Path, suffering can be ceased. The Eightfold path teaches how understanding, thought, speech, action, livelihood, effort, mindfulness and concentration can all be undertaken with rightness. "Selected from the five great collections of discourses which form the Sutta-Pitaka" (preface)
